Culture of New YorkThe people in the colony of New York were primarily Dutch, and this reflected on their culture and way of life, for it was very similar to that of in the Netherlands at the time. Daily LifePeople had a very systematic way of life; they "rose at day-break, dined at eleven, and went to bed at sundown". Houses were usually very small and made of wood, while rich families tended to have larger brick dwellings. Colonial TasksWomen and girls did the cooking, cleaning, and household work. They were also in charge of business and defending the house. Men hunted, made tools, and worked in the garden. Colonists grew their own food, like wheat, corn, peas, pumpkins and potatoes. Children attended a one-room schoolhouse where they learned about their religion, reading, and writing. AttireThe daily clothing of both men and women were different to what people wear modern day. Men wore shirts, breeches, and boots. On the other hand, women wore dresses, aprons, bonnets, petticoats, and shoes.
